Stage 2
Enhanced Practice in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Aims
To enable the delegate to further enhance their evidence -based understanding of the theoretical and practical background of CBT with common mental health problems within their area of practice with users and carers.


Who it is for
Any person who is involved in working with individuals who have mild to moderate issues, who would like to further develop their use of the CBT approach within their practice with clients/ users and gain academic credit for their studies. Between taught sessions students will be expected to complete homework, including exercises, and reflect on their findings e.g., they will monitor the activities they do which give them pleasure and a sense of achievement and notice their effect on their mood or complete a mood diary. They will be expected to complete a portfolio both as a formative and assessment.


Eligibility
Delegates will have to demonstrate successful completion of either the 12 day cognitive behavioural training or its equivalent. Any person who has a previously accredited training in another modality of psychotherapy or be qualified members of a mental health profession. The delegates will also have to demonstrate the academic ability to study at either diploma, degree level or postgraduate level.


Course Structure
The modules will be taught with a mixture of lectures, experiential work, self directed study, role play, seminars, video and audio work. It will include supervision and practice as an integral part of the educational process - each module will include clinical CBT supervision, taught sessions and facilitated role play and practice. Students will complete work-based mentored, assessed, professional practice in CBT in their place of work or in a suitable placement. On-line support and discussion will be facilitated throughout the course and students will have access to the course tutor to manage any clinical CBT questions that may emerge in practice, in addition to their workplace mentor.

Total hours and Academic Credit This course will encompass 40 credits at either Degree or Masters level, 72 hours of study and 100 hours of supervised practice. Assessment Students will be assessed by case study, reports, competency scales, portfolio extracts and video/audio tapes.

Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Examine and evaluate critically evidence – based perspectives in current CBT theory and practice, including and in relation to other psychotherapeutic approaches
  • Maintain the therapeutic relationship and manage challenges competently
  • Assess and manage risk effectively and safely
  • Develop proficiency in case formulation skills
  • Attune the process of therapeutic decision making, screening, assessment and outcome measurement to individual need
  • Plan and work with treatment techniques responsively and creatively
  • Integrate new approaches in ways of working within CBT practice
  • Develop creativity and confidence in becoming a CBT scientist-practitioner, aided by the process of self and clinical supervision
  • Liaise and communicate with other agencies and individuals involved in the client’s care, to ensure a holistic approach
  • Apply and integrate reflectively current ethical and legal frameworks and codes of practice
